How to Plan a Video Ad: A Guide for Brands in North Cyprus
From the goal and the script to the shoot, the edit and platform formats: a practical, step-by-step guide to planning a video ad or brand film.

A good video ad is won long before the shoot, at the planning stage. Decisions made before the camera rolls decide what the film says, who it speaks to and whether viewers stay past the first seconds. This guide walks through planning a video ad or brand film for a brand in North Cyprus, from idea to release.
1. Start with one goal
A film that tries to say everything leaves nothing behind. Pick one goal first:
- Introduce the brand and stay in people's minds,
- Announce a new product, service or venue,
- Drive people to an offer, a booking or a message,
- Build trust by showing your team and how you work.
The goal sets the film's length, its tone and the call to action at the end.
2. Define the audience
Who will watch? University students in Famagusta, a family planning a holiday in Kyrenia and a business buyer in Nicosia won't react the same way. The audience's language and age, and where and on which device they'll watch, shape every decision from the script to the music. For many brands in North Cyprus that means planning Turkish and English versions, or subtitles, from the start.
3. Idea and script: the first seconds
On social media, viewers decide whether to stay within the first few seconds, so the opening is the most important part of the script:
- Open with the strongest image or the most intriguing question.
- Choose one main message and say it clearly.
- Many people watch without sound; make sure the message works through images and captions too.
- End by telling viewers what to do: visit the site, send a message, book.
4. Storyboard and shooting plan
The script becomes a storyboard, drawn or described scene by scene. Then comes the shot list: which shot, where, in what light and in what order. A good plan saves time and budget on the day.
Treat light as part of the plan. In summer, the hard midday sun throws harsh shadows on faces and surfaces outdoors; early morning and late afternoon usually give much softer light.
5. Cast, locations and permissions
- Make sure everyone on camera has given written permission for their image to be used.
- Get the location owner's permission; check in advance what permits public places and drone shots need.
- Music needs a licence. Using a song found online in an ad without permission causes legal trouble and can get the video muted on platforms.
6. The shoot
The shoot is where the plan is carried out. Everyone should have the shot list, the running order and the timings. Alongside the main shots, capture close-ups, details and cutaways that give the edit room to breathe. If vertical and horizontal versions are needed, frame for both from the start.
7. Edit, colour, sound and graphics
The edit builds the film's rhythm and story. Colour grading gives it a consistent look, the sound is cleaned and the music placed. Motion graphics carry the logo, text and captions into the film in line with the brand's visual identity.
8. Formats and lengths
The same film is published in different shapes on different platforms:
- 9:16 vertical: Reels, TikTok and stories.
- 16:9 horizontal: YouTube, websites and screens.
- 1:1 square or 4:5: in-feed posts.
Cutting 6, 15 and 30-second versions alongside the main film gets you far more content from the same shoot.
9. Release and measurement
Once the film is out, look at the numbers: watch time, completion rate, clicks and the messages that come in. Comparing two versions with different openings shows which idea holds viewers. For paid promotion you can target towns across North Cyprus.
What affects the budget
The cost of a video ad depends on the number of shooting days, locations and crew, cast, equipment, how much editing and graphics it needs, the number of versions and music licensing. That's why every project is quoted individually.
